Our Verdict

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 opens with the Culling Game — a battle royale orchestrated by the ancient sorcerer Kenjaku that transforms Japan into a supernatural killing ground. MAPPA returns as the animation studio, and the first three episodes suggest this may be their most ambitious work since the Shibuya Incident arc.

The Culling Game's rule-based structure is a departure from standard shonen tournament arcs. Players earn points by killing other participants, and the rules can be modified by spending accumulated points — creating a constantly shifting strategic landscape. This mechanical complexity rewards attentive viewers in ways that simple power-scaling battles cannot.

Yuji Itadori's character arc takes a darker turn as he confronts the reality of killing incarnated sorcerers who inhabit innocent hosts. The moral ambiguity of his position — executing people to save people — represents Gege Akutami's most sophisticated thematic work.

New characters like Hiromi Higuruma and Takako Uro immediately distinguish themselves with unique cursed techniques that prioritize creativity over raw power. Higuruma's domain expansion, Deadly Sentencing, is one of the most inventive abilities in the entire series.

The animation quality is exceptional. MAPPA has refined their approach since the controversial production schedule of Season 2. Character acting in dialogue scenes feels more expressive, and the cursed energy visual effects have been enhanced with particle systems that make each technique feel distinct.

Rating: 4.7 out of 5. JJK Season 3 delivers the brutality and intelligence fans expected. The Culling Game arc is shaping up to be the series' creative peak.
